When you are sick …. and a caregiver.

Caring for a loved one can be challenging to put it nicely. Some things can be avoided but caring for one’s parents, spouse, children, etc cannot. However, going it alone is unwise. Some of the same principles apply for caregiving as many other things life throws at us. Some tips to help manage:

  • Ask for Help: Do not hesitate to reach out to family, friends, or community resources. Many people are willing to help but might not know how. Statistics show people often do not volunteer because they are not asked.
  • Always be specific about what you need, for example grocery shopping, meal trains, or even a visit.
  • Have a backup plan. Make a list of folks that may be a resource. Those can include family and friends but can also include government benefits. For example, in the US caregivers may be eligible to be paid bc of a shortage of professional.
  • Research resources to find the availability and affordability of professional care.
  • Take Care of Yourself: Prioritize your health by getting enough rest, eating well, and staying hydrated. It’s essential to take breaks and not push yourself too hard.
  • Use Community Resources: Check out local services that can provide support, such as health aides, housekeeping, or meal delivery services.
  • Communicate with Healthcare Providers: Keep your healthcare team informed about your situation. They can offer advice and may know additional sources of support.
  • Join Support Groups: Connecting with others in similar situations can provide emotional support and practical advice.
  • There may come a time when the next step is to make other arrangements for the patient. No one wants to place their loved ones in an assisted living but that may be the best thing for everyone involved. Especially if the patient becomes combative, if they need to be lifted, or when their care interferes with other relationships. If possible do not make that decision alone.
  •  DO NOT FEEL GUILTY. All any one can do is their best.

Remember, it is okay to ask for help and take time for yourself. Your well-being is crucial for both you and the person you are caring for.
